Authorisation of Electrical Contractors In Iceland only those with authorisation from Mannvirkjastofnun can undertake work in the general market as electrical contractors in the field of electrical installations and repair work on all kinds of equipment and appliances, LV and HV. Mannvirkjastofnun is the competent authority responsible for the overall supervision of all electrical safety matters in Iceland, including the authorisation of electrical contractors. All electrical contractors shall establish a documented safety control system to ensure that all their activities conform to electrical safety rules and regulations. There are 540 electrical contractors in Iceland with valid authorisations. Independent accredited electrical inspection agencies authorised by Mannvirkjastofnun perform inspections of the work on electrical installations performed by electrical contractors, as well as inspections of their safety control system, in accordance with defined inspection rules and procedure policy issued by Mannvirkjastofnun. There are three categories of authorisation:

A-authorisation

An authorisation to work as an electrical contractor in the general market in the field of highvoltage installations. A-authorisation is required for those who undertake work in the general market as electrical contractors in the field of high-voltage installations. Companies operating in the general market in the field of high-voltage installations shall employ a person with A-authorisation which results in their authorisation to contract work on high-voltage installations and who will also be responsible for the work on high-voltage installations performed by the company.

 

B-authorisation

An authorisation to work as an electrical contractor in the general market in the field of lowvoltage installations and repair work on all kinds of equipment and appliances. B-authorisation is required for those who undertake work in the general market as electrical contractors in the field of low-voltage installations and repair work on all kinds of equipment and appliances. Companies operating in the general market in the field of low-voltage installations and repair work on all kinds of equipment and appliances shall employ a person with B-authorisation which results in their authorisation to contract work on low-voltage installations in the general market and who will also be responsible for the work on low-voltage installations performed by the company.

 

C-authorisation (CA;CB)

A limited authorisation to work as an electrical contractor in the field of high- and/or lowvoltage installations and repair work on all kinds of low-voltage equipment and appliances within a company or an institution not involved in contracting in the general market. The authorisation is limited to work performed within the premises of the respective company or institution.

C-authorisation (CA;CB) is required for those who undertake work in the fields of high- and/or low-voltage installations and repair work on all kinds of equipment and appliances. The authorisation is limited to work performed within the premises of the respective company or institution.

 

A-authorisation for electrical work

The person who applies for an A-authorisation shall fulfil the following requirements:

(1) Have a degree in electrical power engineering from a recognised university and two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of high voltage installations, or

(2) Have a degree in electrical power engineering from a recognised technical college and two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of high voltage installations, or

(3) Have the journeymans license as an electrician and an examination as a electrical technician from Reykjavik University or another recognised technical college followed by two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of high voltage installations, or

(4) Have the journeymans license as an electrician and an examination as a master electrician from a recognised trade school followed by two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of high voltage installations.

 

B-authorisation for electrical work

The person who applies for an B-authorisation shall fulfil the following requirements:

(1) Have a degree in electrical power engineering from a recognised university and two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of low voltage installations, or

(2) Have a degree in electrical power engineering from a recognised technical college and two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of low voltage installations, or

(3) Have the journeymans license as an electrician and an examination as a electrical technician from Reykjavik University or another recognised technical college followed by two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of low voltage installations, or

(4) Have the journeymans license as an electrician and an examination as a master electrician from a recognised trade school followed by two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of low voltage installations.

 

C-authorisation for electrical work - CA-authorisation

The person who wants to acquire CA-authorisation which is a limited authorisation for work on high voltage systems shall fulfil the following requirements:

(1) Have a degree in electrical power engineering from a recognised university and two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of high voltage installations, or

(2) Have a degree in electrical power engineering from a recognised technical college and two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of high voltage installations, or

(3) Have the journeymans license as an electrician and an examination as a electrical technician from Reykjavik University or another recognised technical college followed by two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of high voltage installations, or

(4) Have the journeymans license as an electrician and an examination as a master electrician from a recognised trade school followed by two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of high voltage installations. The authorisation is limited to work performed within the premises of the respective company or institution that provide necessary tools and facilities.

 

CB-authorisation for electrical work

The person who wants to acquire CB-authorisation which is a limited authorisation for work on low voltage systems shall fulfil the following requirements:

(1) Have a degree in electrical power engineering from a recognised university and two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of low voltage installations, or

(2) Have a degree in electrical power engineering from a recognised technical college and two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of low voltage installations, or

(3) Have the journeymans license as an electrician and an examination as a electrical technician from Reykjavik University or another recognised technical college followed by two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of low voltage installations, or

(4) Have the journeymans license as an electrician and an examination as a master electrician from a recognised trade school followed by two years experience in work related to design and/or erection of low voltage installations.

The authorisation is limited to work performed within the premises of the respective company or institution that provide necessary tools and facilities.
